Our beginners’ courses are friendly, supportive and most importantly fun. Many of our previous beginners are now well-established club members.
The eight week course culminates in Chippenham parkrun on Saturday 12 June where you will receive a bespoke Calne Running Club medal. parkruns are free weekly timed 5km runs that happen around the world,
The course is run by our UKA qualified coach, Denise Nott and over the weeks will include helpful advice on a variety of topics including running technique, clothing, cross-training, foam rolling, injury prevention and basic nutrition.
Running can help lift our mood, increase our self-esteem, sleep better, think more clearly and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. It can also help you lose weight, get fitter and you’re guaranteed to make new friends.
For two weeks following completion of the course, Calne Running Club is offering our beginners a discount on annual membership to join us (£17 to run until April 2022).

A little about the course…..

We have held an annual beginner’s course every year for the past four years and have seen over 100 people complete their first 5k after taking part.

Our all inclusive, 10 week course is delivered by our very own UK Athletics coach, Denise Nott and is open to everybody.  However, it is aimed at people who have never run before and want to give it a go or those who are returning back after injury. We see a whole variety of reasons for people joining the course from those wanting to lose weight that may have been gained over the festive period, those who want a focus to get fitter in the New Year to those who just want to get to their first 5k!  It also has a huge benefit not just to physical well being but to mental health as well due to the feel good factor that exercise can bring.

Beginners completing their first 5k after their 10 week programme at the beginning of 2017

The course has been incredibly well received in the past and has been described as “life changing, if not life saving” in some cases.  We ensure that the course is fun and engaging and through the course of the programme you will become fully engaged with our friendly family of members who will help you through the course, many of whom will be from our previous courses so will know what it’s like.  You are guaranteed to make new friends and possibly even catch the running bug!

The Course

Running (forgive the pun!) for 10 weeks, the start date for the next course is Tuesday 20th April.

The course will cost £3 per week and we ask for this payment up front (£30 payment) to cut down on administration at each session. Online entries are now open via entry central. Please follow this link to book your place. If you would like to book your place via cash or cheque, please contact

Calne Running Club Beginner’s Medal

The course culminates with all beginners completing parkrun (Chippenham or Swindon, weather dependent) where those who complete the course will be presented with a bespoke CRC medal and get to eat home made cake at a little post run celebration.

To register interest in our beginner’s course, please email and we will keep you posted on what you need to do to enrol.

If you do catch the running bug, we offer our beginners a discounted membership of £16 for the year if you join Calne Running Club within two weeks of completing the course.  This membership offers many benefits including weekly coached sessions and a progression run on Tuesday evenings to build up to 5 miles and beyond.
